Professional Communication Coaching Questions, Answered by an SLP

A speech-language pathologist is trained in the science of how people speak, think and interact, not only in surface-level public speaking tips. An SLP coach understands speech and voice mechanics, the cognitive side of communication, and the emotional dynamics of confidence and anxiety.

SLPs are medical communication experts who understand:

• The mechanics of speech and voice (rate, clarity, projection, articulation)

• The cognitive side of communication (attention, memory, thought organization, ADHD-related challenges)

• The emotional and social dynamics of confidence, anxiety, and interpersonal communication

This combination makes an SLP uniquely qualified to help with things like high-stakes workplace communication, public speaking, leadership presence, and communication challenges related to ADHD or anxiety. In my practice, I blend this speech-language pathology background with business-focused coaching, so you get both clinical insight and practical tools you can use in real meetings, presentations, and everyday professional conversations.

Not at all! Communication coaches, especially those with a speech-language pathology background, work on far more than just enunciation.

Beyond how you form sounds, SLP-led communication coaching can address your voice and tone, speech rate and pacing, public speaking anxiety, confidence and executive presence, body language and facial expression, message structure and storytelling, and interpersonal communication skills (like listening, turn-taking, and handling difficult conversations). In my practice, we often start with a Communication Analysis or 1:1 coaching to look at all of these elements together, so you’re not just pronouncing words more clearly—you’re communicating more effectively and authentically in real professional settings.

Yes. Communication coaching reduces fear of public speaking by giving you tools to manage anxiety, structure your message and practice in a safe, guided way. Fear usually comes from unclear structure, cognitive overload and negative self-talk, and each one is trainable.

Fear of public speaking is rarely just about “being shy”…it’s usually a mix of:

• Unclear structure: Not knowing what to say first or how to organize your ideas.

• Cognitive overload: Trying to remember every detail while monitoring your audience and your own anxiety.

• Negative self-talk: Interpreting nerves as “proof” you’re not good at this.

• Lack of realistic feedback: Never getting specific guidance on what to change and what’s already working.

Effective communication coaching addresses all of these. You learn:

• Simple frameworks for presentations, updates, and Q&A so your brain isn’t improvising under pressure.

• Strategies to regulate your nervous system before and during speaking.

• How to adjust your rate, pauses, and tone so you sound more confident, even if you still feel nervous.

• How to practice using your own real-world scenarios instead of generic exercises.

In my practice, I use both clinical insight (as a speech-language pathologist) and practical workplace experience to support clients with public speaking anxiety, including those with ADHD and high performance pressure.

Communication is both highly personal and highly nuanced. Every session is customized based on your communication goals, anxiety patterns, workplace environment, and cultural or linguistic background. We tailor strategies for interviews, presentations, leadership roles, conflict resolution, and day-to-day professional communication.

Virtual communication coaching services work by meeting with your coach online (via Zoom) on a regular schedule to work on real communication goals using video, audio, and shared materials.

In my practice, here’s what that typically looks like:

• Step 1 – Initial evaluation or discovery call:
We start with either a free discovery call or a 60-minute Communication Evaluation to clarify your goals (e.g., speaking up in meetings, public speaking, managing ADHD-related communication issues, handling difficult conversations, etc.) and decide whether 1:1 coaching, a Communication Analysis, or another service is the best fit.

• Step 2 – Plan and structure:
Based on your goals, we agree on a plan (for example, a 5-, 10-, 15-, or 20-session coaching package). Sessions are held virtually so you can join from home, the office, or anywhere in the Kansas City area or beyond.

• Step 3 – Coaching sessions:
During sessions, we work on real situations from your professional life—upcoming presentations, interviews, performance reviews, team meetings, or everyday communication patterns. We might:

  • Practice responses and speaking frameworks

  • Review slides or talking points together

  • Role-play challenging conversations

  • Use data from recordings or a Communication Analysis to refine your delivery

• Step 4 – Tools, homework, and support:
You’ll leave each session with specific tools, structures, or small “experiments” to try between meetings (for example, a new way to organize your updates, a breathing pattern before speaking, or a script for a difficult conversation). You can also pair coaching with resources like my ADHD Communication Webinar + Workbook to reinforce what we cover.

• Step 5 – Review progress and adjust:
Because everything is virtual, we can easily incorporate follow-up recordings, debrief how real interactions went, and adjust strategies as you grow. The focus is always on making communication feel calmer, clearer, and more effective—not on performing for the camera.

Virtual communication coaching gives you flexible access to a business communication coach (and speech-language pathologist) without commuting, while still allowing us to work deeply and practically on the speaking and listening skills you use every day at work.

You need to learn what you’re already doing well, where your communication tends to break down, and which specific skills most affect your results at work.

That usually includes three big categories:

• Content: How clearly you organize your thoughts, choose your words, and get to the point.

• Delivery: Your rate, tone, volume, facial expression, and body language—how you sound and look when you speak.

• Frame of Mind: What’s happening in your brain and nervous system (anxiety, overthinking, ADHD, masking) before and during communication.

When you understand these pieces, you stop asking “Am I just bad at this?” and start asking much more useful questions like “Do I need to slow my rate, simplify my structure, manage my cognitive load, or shift my self-talk?”

At Speak Like a Professional, we use The Resonant Communication Method™, our evidence-based framework, to help you assess these areas systematically instead of guessing. A great starting point is a Communication Evaluation or a Communication Analysis, where I review a real recording of you speaking and show you exactly what’s working and what needs attention. For a lighter-touch option, tools like my Communication Strengths Profile and ADHD Communication Workbook can help you begin mapping out your strengths and growth areas on your own.

Knowing concrete data about your communication helps you reach your goals because it turns vague self-criticism into specific, measurable skills you can improve.

Most people come in saying things like, “I ramble,” “I sound nervous,” or “I’m just not a good speaker.” Those labels are too general to act on. When we look at actual data. Your speech rate, pause patterns, clarity of structure, filler-word frequency, vocal variety, and how often listeners need clarification tells us exactly what’s going on and how to fix it.

Data helps you:

• Build self-awareness without shame: You see patterns instead of “personal flaws.”

• Set focused goals: For example, “reduce my rate from 190 wpm to 150 wpm in key presentations,” or “use a simple structure for all status updates.”

• Track progress over time: You can literally hear and see your improvements rather than relying on feelings alone.

• Align your efforts with your outcomes: You stop spending energy on things that don’t matter and focus on the levers that actually change how you’re perceived.

We track your progress using both objective data and your lived experience, so you can see and feel your communication improving over time.

On the data side, we look at measurable features of your speaking—such as speech rate, pitch range, inflection patterns, and pause length—to see whether your pacing, clarity, and vocal presence are moving in the right direction. On the experiential side, we track changes in how you feel when you communicate: your confidence, anxiety levels, sense of control, and overall presence in real-world situations like meetings, presentations, and difficult conversations.

Together, we set individualized goals, use structured progress tools (often informed by your Communication Analysis and ongoing 1:1 coaching), and do regular check-ins to review what’s changing. This ensures your growth is tangible, data-backed, and directly aligned with the communication demands you face at work, not just “you sound better,” but “you sound better, you feel better, and people are responding differently.”

Most Speak Like a Professional clients invest between $175 and $3,000 in total for 1:1 communication coaching, depending on their goals and the format.

For my practice specifically:

• Individual 1:1 communication coaching:
Most clients invest between $175 and $3,000 total, depending on whether they’re doing a single Communication Evaluation, a shorter package, or a full 10–20 session series. We’ll talk through your goals, timeline, and budget on a free discovery call and I’ll recommend a package only if it truly fits your needs.

• Communication Analyses (one-time service):
This is a separate, flat-fee service where you submit a recording and receive detailed, expert feedback and recommendations. It’s a good option if you want personalized insight without committing to an ongoing package.

• Workshops and company retainers:
For organizations, pricing depends on length, customization, and scope (for example, 2–8 hour workshops or ongoing support), so we’ll design a plan and quote based on your team’s needs.

Because communication coaching is highly individualized, the best way to understand what it would cost for you is to schedule a discovery call. On that call, we’ll clarify your goals, walk through options.

Yes. Many employers use professional development budgets or educational benefits to cover communication coaching. This investment supports leadership growth, reduces miscommunication costs, and enhances team performance. We also offer guidance and templates to help you request reimbursement.

Yes! Communication coaching is worth the investment if you’re willing to actively practice and apply what you learn, because it directly improves clarity, efficiency, relationships, and opportunities at work.

Stronger communication skills can help you:

• Run clearer meetings with less misunderstanding and rework

• Present your ideas in a way that leadership and clients actually understand and remember

• Build more trust and credibility with colleagues, direct reports, and stakeholders

• Reduce the mental drain and anxiety you feel before, during, and after high-stakes conversations

From an ROI perspective, even small improvements (fewer miscommunications, smoother presentations, better feedback conversations) can have a measurable impact on productivity, career progression, and client or team outcomes over time.

That said, communication coaching isn’t a passive service; it’s a partnership. My role (through 1:1 coaching, Communication Analyses, and workshops) is to give you clear insight, structure, and tools tailored to your brain and your environment. Your role is to show up, be honest, and practice the strategies between sessions. Clients who commit to that process consistently report that the gains in confidence, effectiveness, and reduced stress more than justify the cost.
